Setting meaningful homework: (BECG, Book 8 Meaningful homework – Consolidating learning, deepening understanding and constructing knowledge, P.2-4)
- Homework should not involve pupils in mechanical repetition, such as copying from the texts/ notes or just rote learning.
- The given homework should be relevant to the school curriculum and should have a clear goal. A piece of homework should not contain too many ideas.
- A variety of approaches and styles can be used for designing homework to motivate pupils.
- Use homework to help pupils to plan and take control of their own learning, see their own progress, develop good studying habits, and work in groups to develop collaboration skills.
- It should neither be too simple nor too complex and it should be framed in such a way that it encourages pupils to do their best.
- It should help improve pupils’ thinking and promote deeper understanding of a specific theme or issue.
- It should be able to cater for individual differences.
